James R. ''Red'' Ely died Sept. 11, 1997, at his Anchorage residence. He was 57. An Indian funeral was held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Fairbanks. Burial was at Birch Hill Cemetery in Fairbanks.
Mr. Ely was born Feb. 22, 1940, in Flint, Mich. and came to Alaska in 1969. He was formerly from Fairbanks and moved to Anchorage in 1984. Mr. Ely was a member of the Korean Presbyterian Open Door Church. He was also a ham radio operator.
He is survived by his wife, Sun of Anchorage; sons and daughters-in-law, Russell and Jene, Kenneth, and Ronald and Debi, all of Fairbanks, Jim and Christine, Erick, and Jeffery and Larae, all of Anchorage; daughter, Corrina and husband Richard of Anchorage; son, Daniel, of Dallas; 12 grandchildren and other relatives in Michigan. Local arrangements by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
