Motion Picture and Television Director, Actor. During a lengthy and distinguishable career of helming films and television programs, he will perhaps be remembered for his directing of numerous episodes of the original "Star Trek" TV series (1966 to 1969). Born into a Jewish family, his father was a watchmaker. He began his career in entertainment during his early teenage years on the Vaudeville circuit as a singer and dancer. This experience led to his Broadway debut in the production "Battle Hymn" (1936), which was followed with "Johnny Johnson" (1936 to 1937) and "The World We Make" (1939 to 1940). He attended New York University with ambitions of becoming a physician, however his passion for the theatre drew him back. During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant with the United States Army Signal Corps and following his return home, he resumed his acting career in the stage production "Home of the Brave" (1945 to 1946). He embarked upon Hollywood in 1946 and made his motion picture debut as 'Ned 'Fingers' Ford in the George Raft film "Nocturne" (1946). He went on to co-star with John Garfield in "Body and Soul" (1947) and appeared in "The Street with No Name" (1948), "Thieves' Highway" (1949) and "Outside the Wall" (1950). He made his motion picture directing debut with "Shakedown" (1950) and over the next decade, he helmed such pictures as "Meet Danny Wilson" (1952), "Flesh and the Fury" (1952), "Istanbul" (1957), "Tammy and the Bachelor" (1957), "The Man of a Thousand Faces" (1957), "Twilight of the Gods" (1958) and "The Plunderers" (1960). He moved on to television during the early 1960s and directed such programs as "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "The Munsters," "Adam-12," "Emergency" and many more. Pevney received a Hugo Award for the classic "Star Trek" episode " The City on the Edge of Forever" (1967). He was married to actress Mitzi Green from 1942 until her death in 1969.
