She was the daughter of John & Joanna (Boynton) Grout. She married Nathan Hale, 28 Jan 1766, at Rindge, New Hampshire. Her husband died as a British prisoner of war in 1780.
She took on sole responsibility for raising their children. She went through three trials before finally getting the estate of her husband settled. She appeared in census records as the head of the household. In 1796 she remarried, but soon afterwards obtained a divorce and resumed using the Hale name.
She died at the Chelsea, Vermont home of her son, Harry, a successful merchant who served in the Vermont House of Representatives and held numerous other positions in state and local government.
She was the mother of seven children;
