Joe was an accomplished accordianist and band-leader of "Jolly Joe and the Bavarians." He was a WWII veteran and played as a preshow (and even rode in the airplanes with) such greats as Bob Hope and Danny Kaye. Joe had Mickie Rooney as his army bunkmate for one night. Joe thought Mickie Rooney was unimpressed.

Joseph was the first child of Frank and Mary Shumbris Sombers. He married first, Irmgard Buck, in Wiesbaden,Germany. He married later to Elisabeth Gasteger. He changed his name from Shumbris to Sombers during his marriage to Elisabeth. Joe had six children. He was a fun loving person and meant-well in life.
