Alphonzo was the son of Lyman Kenyon and Melissa Phelps Kenyon. He was born in Stump Grove, Lafayette, Wisconsin. He had an older brother, Alonzo, for whom the two would be constantly confused for one another because of the similarity of their names. He followed his brother Alonzo by enlisting in the Civil War for the Union, on 24 Jan 1865, at which time he was living in Arcadia, Wisconsin. The 1870 Census showed him living in Colony, Delaware County, Iowa. He later made his home in Watonwan Minnesota, where he married his wife Bessie and has their daughter, Pearle P. Kenyon. By 1910, the family was living in San Francisco, where he worked for the Illinois Glass Company. By 1926, they have moved to Watsonville, located in Santa Cruz California. This move reunited him with his brother, Alonzo. He and his brother are buried within the family plot to be together always.
