Per the Kentucky Birth Index, 1911-1999, James D. Spears was born on 20 Dec 1931 in Madison County, KY, to the former Lucy Williams. Although not listed in the Ancestry.com summary of the index, his father was Dewey Ester Spears. James was the first of three children born to Lucy and Dewey Spears. The other two children, in order of birth, were Myrtle Allene (always called Allene) and Sally Jean (always called Jean).

James grew up in Madison County near the community of Berea.

At the time of the 1940 federal census, James and his family were living in the rural area east of Berea in Madison County, KY. In the census record, the father was listed as Dewey Spears. He was 35 years old, a graduate of the eighth grade, and employed as the drive of a county school truck. His wife was Lucy Spears. She was 30 years old and a graduate of the eighth grade. Both were born in Kentucky. They were living in the same rental house in 1935. There were three children in the home. They were listed in the census record as James D. (8 years old), Ilene (7 years old), and Sally Jane (2 years old). All were born in Kentucky. Ilene should have been listed as Allene and Sally Jane should have been listed as Sally Jean.

James joined the United States Army as a Private on 8 Jan 1951 and he was discharged on 13 Jan 1954. He attained the rank of Corporal prior to his release from the military. He spent part of his active service stationed in Germany. After his discharge from the army, James went back to Madison County, KY, to live. While living in the Berea area, James became a member of the Masonic Lodge.

James married Laura Cathleen Adams on 5 Jun 1959 in Jellico, Campbell County, TN. The couple was united in marriage by Edgar H. Douglas, Justice of the Peace. Jellico is located just south of the Tennessee border with Kentucky and straight down Interstate 75 from Berea, KY. James Edwin Spears was born to this union.

James married Martha Belle Lunsford on 19 Jan 1963 in Jellico, Campbell County, TN. The marriage ceremony was officiated over by Paul H. Harp, Justice of the Peace.

James worked at a variety of jobs after his release from the military. He was a supervisor for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts at the time of his death.
