Aranna Martha Watson, 94, died Friday, February 24, 2006, at St. James House, Baytown. She was born in Cobb County, GA, to Charlie Rodger Watson and Ottie O. Kemp Watson on October 30, 1911 (same birthday as her maternal grandfather, Andrew W. Kemp). Later she and her family moved to Marietta, GA.

Ms. Watson graduated from Marietta High School in 1927 at the age of 15. She attended Bessie Tift College, Forsythe, GA (now Tift College and part of Mercer University, Atlanta, GA), and graduated in 1931 with an AB degree. While attending Bessie Tiff College, Ms. Watson worked two summers teaching at two county schools, later closed due to consolidation. She also had the privilege of working with a Baptist volunteer missionary in the underdeveloped mountains of north Georgia. Living in the homes of local residents, she learned about lifestyles in areas difficult to reach. In the fall of 1931 Ms. Watson taught at a school now known as Robert L. Osborne Senior High, in Marietta, GA. She taught fourth grade and assisted with extra curricular activities. In 1938 ninth grade was added and she was moved to teach high school. While she was teaching she attended extension courses from Oglethorpe University, Oglethorpe, GA (now in Atlanta, GA). She received an MA degree in education in 1937. In 1939 she went to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating with an M.R.E. degree in 1941.

On August 3, 1941, Ms. Watson came to Baytown and was employed by First Baptist Church, Goose Creek (now Memorial Baptist Church, Baytown) as the education director and church secretary. She stayed until April 1948.

From 1948-1976 Ms. Watson worked with South Texas Girl Scout Council and the San Jacinto Girl Scout Council as a field director, field advisor, and director of field services. Camp Aranna, a Girl Scout camp located in Baytown, is named for her. From 1948-1955 she served as choir director at Wooster Baptist Church, Baytown. On July 1, 1977, she joined the staff of San Jacinto Baptist Association to work with senior and single adults. Under her leadership the Bay Area Baptist Senior Adults, later named The Senior Adults of San Jacinto Baptist Association and now named The 55+ of San Jacinto Baptist Association, was established. She served as Special Ministries Consultant until December 31, 1997. At that time she began her work as a volunteer with the Mission Service Corps until December 2003.

Throughout her lifetime Ms Watson was recognized many times for the work she did. Three special awards included the Thanks Badge from the Baytown Girl Scouts in March 1953, The Senior Adult of the Year Award from East Texas Baptist University in 1991, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas Christian Life Commission Senior Adult of the Year Award. Ms. Watson was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Association of Professional Girl Scout Workers, and Wooster Baptist Church of Baytown.

Ms. Watson is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Rodger Watson and Ottie O. Kemp Watson; a sister, Wilma Kathleen Watson (age 15); and a special aunt, Ms. Carlie C. Kemp, all of Marietta, GA; a brother, Charles Noble Watson, and a sister-in-law, June Collins Watson of Atlanta, GA; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen B. Watson, a niece, Paula Watson, and her husband, Rick Irwin, of Atlanta, GA; a nephew, Charles Collins Watson, and his wife, Sharon Watson, of Keller, TX; great nieces Laurien Irwin of Atlanta, GA; Sarah Watson Barnett and her husband, David, of Longview, TX; and Hope Watson of Keller, TX; great nephew, Jonathan Irwin of Atlanta, GA; and a favorite cousin, Florence B. Jones of Kennesaw, GA. She is also survived by the extended family of Dallas M. Ryle, Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Marietta, GA, and numerous other cousins and many, many friends.

Ms. Watson was lovingly welcomed into the homes of two "unofficially adopted" families. Loving thanks to the family of the late Rosa & Manuel Ciruti of Baytown, who provided a home for her for 48 years, and their daughter Marjorie Ciruti Williamson. Also, loving thanks to the late Lucretia S. Donnelly of Baytown who provided a home for her for six and a half years and her son, George Edward Donnelly, and her daughter, Margaret Donnelly Allison.

Also, much love and appreciation to four special friends who voluntarily assisted her with her needs, Sandra Jones, Doreen Eastwood, Risa Smith, and Lynda Henderson, all of Baytown, TX. Thanks also to the many other dear friends who gave assistance when a need was known. Special thanks to Swan Manor, Baytown, for their care and effort to make a room available when needed and to the entire staff of Saint James House, Baytown, for taking her care to the next level.

Being led by loving parents, grandparents, a special Sunday School teacher, and several other church leaders of First Baptist Church, Marietta, GA, praying regularly for her, Ms. Watson accepted the Lord as Savior. First Baptist Church continued to nurture and to provide support while she attended seminary. She was also blessed to be a member of Wooster Baptist Church, Baytown, from 1948 to present. She testified that God showed great patience with her and gave her support through loving family, friends, and Sunday School experiences. To His glory God supplied her needs throughout her life.
