Seldon Brainard Griswold was born June 15, 1834 near Hartford Connecticut to Roderick L. Griswold and Maria (Spencer) Griswold (both born in Connecticut)
He was in business in Hartford Connecticut, and New York.
In 1861 he went to Chicago, Il, but soon after enlisted in the 53rd Illinois as a private soldier, serving 3 years. At the close of the war he engaged in merchandising at Natchez, Mississippi; afterwards bought a plantation of 2,700 acres, which he operated some years.
Came to Carthage, Missouri, in the spring of 1868, where he opened a small grocery store, which increased to a large wholesale [bought by Platt-Porter company] and retail establishment. He was married twice and both were deceased, his second wife having one child.
He was the owner of S. B. Griswold's wholesale grocery stores, 114 east Fourth street, 1902, president, secretary G W Porter.
He was widowed and passed away on Sept 29, 1918 at southeast corner of Third and Garrison in Carthage, MO.
Burial was at Park Cemetery, Carthage, under the direction of Knell Und. Co.
Griswold avenue exists in Carthage, 2nd street north of Centennial extending east from Baker Boulevard.

ONE OF THE LARGEST HOUSES IN JASPER COUNTY AND DOING BUSINESS OVER A BOARD TRADE AREA.
In 1868 S. B. Griswold elected to make Carthage his home and started in the grocery business. He had been connected with various lines of business since leaving school in Connecticutt, where he was born; had tried both coasts and the interior, enlisted in the early days of the Civil War and tried cotton planting at its close, only to become dissatisfied. The business he began in Carthage as a retail merchant grew to wholesale and in 1898 the present company was incorporated with a fully paid up capital of $40,000. Since then it has even more rapidly expanded until today it occupies one of the foremost places in the list of excellent firms located here.
It occupies a two story and basement brick building on the south side of the square [114 east Fourth street] and carries a full line of groceries, staple and fancy, together with all the various side lines usual to an up-to-date wholesale grocery establishment. The company keeps four salesmen on the road all the time and fills all their orders promptly and with scrupulous honesty, giving their customers assurance of always getting just what they ask for and at prices quoted. Their trade territory includes part of Arkansas and Indian Territory and Southwest Missouri, a rapidly growing section and one in which the pro rata wealth of the inhabitants will compare favorably with any in the United States. This latter fact calls for a better selection and greater variety of goods than many sections demand and this company believes in being always just a little ahead of the demand. This and the reputation for fair dealing built up in the thirty-seven year record of the head of the house is sufficient to account for the success and prominence attained. Mr. Griswold has one child, Miss Blanche Griswold, who is a member of the directorate of the company, its officers composing other members. They are: S. B. Griswold, president and treasurer; C. J. Tobias, vice president and G. W. Porter, secretary and manager.
