Richard was over 17 years of age when he first enlisted in the Marines 28 June 1956, at a recruiting office in Philadelphia. Richard had served in the Marines for about seven years, when he last enlisted in the Marines 12 May 1953, at a recruiting office in Brooklyn, New Year.
After arriving in Vietnam, Richard was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Swift in the vicinity of Hill 43 and the Que Son Valley, being 10 kilometers south southwest of Thang Binh in Quang Tin Province. Richard died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds to the left side of the face, neck and right shoulder from hostile automatic weapons fire. The Marines lost a total of 28 men.
SSgt Jackson served his country for 11 years.
Survived by his wife, Mary G Jackson and a son, Richie M Jackson of 1160 President Street, Brooklyn, New York, and his mother; Ella Burwell of 216 East End Avenue, Littleton, North Carolina, and his sister; Doris Parker of 952 North Saint Bernard Blvd, Littleton, North Carolina.
