Union Civil War Officer. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest son of Shakespearean actor, James E. Murdoch. During the Civil War, he volunteered to serve in the Union Army soon after the hostilities began. Murdoch enlisted and was mustered into Company K as a Sergeant with the 13th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 26, 1861. His regiment was quickly put into action at the Battle of Carnifex Ferry in Virginia. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company K on October 15, 1861. Murdoch became a 1st Lieutenant on March 15, 1862 while his regiment occupied Nashville. Murdoch was eventually promoted to Captain of Company B on January 1, 1863 to replace an officer who had fallen at the Battle of Stone's River. He participated in several other major engagements during the war including the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, and Perryville. Murdoch was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863 when he was 22 years old. He was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery on June 16, 1864. An inscription on his monument reads as: "Meek and Gentle in the Walks of Life. Courage and Fortitude marked the career of the soldier. One of many who rich in hope and promise have died that the Nation might live."Thomas enlisted at 24 years old on 6/19/61 as a Sgt. He was mustered on on 6/26/1861. He was wounded at Chickamauga, Tn. on 9/19/1863, and died from these wounds 9/20/1863.
