Vincent Liberto (27151602)
Father Liberto was born on January 20, 1903 in Beaumont, the son of Frank Liberto and Angelina Rinando Liberto. He studied at St. Mary’s Parish School, St. Anthony High School Seminary and the Oblate School of Theology, all in San Antonio.
Upon his priestly ordination in June 1929, Fr. Liberto was assigned as Assistant Pastor at St. Benedict’s Church, San Benito for six years. His subsequent pastorates were Immaculate Conception in Asherton (1936—1943), Immaculate Conception in Houston (1943-1949), Sacred Heart in Crystal City (1949—1952), and St. Mary’s Italian Church in the French Quarter of New Orleans (1952—1972).
In July 1972, he entered hospital chaplaincy, a ministry which occupied the rest of his priestly career. He was Chaplain to the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in New Orleans from 1972 to 1975 and then to St. Mary’s Hospital, in Port Arthur, Texas from 1975 until illness forced him to retire to San Antonio in late 1986.
Father “V”, as he was affectionately called, loved people. Long before it became common practice for the clergy, he was a member of and supported the chief civic clubs and charitable drives of the cities where he was stationed. He was characterized by one of his Oblate superiors as “a happy, helpful person who literally never met a stranger”, Fr. Liberto maintained his sense of humor through months of sickness from cancer.
He passed away in his sleep early Sunday morning, May 3, at the Oblate Madonna Residence in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 84
