EULOGY FOR DEGLY MANCHAME

I stand before you tonight in the state of profound sorrow and disbelief. I am here to mourn the death of my co-worker, and friend, Degly Manchame.

Each person here has known Degly in a different capacity. He was the loving husband, doting father, devoted son, caring brother, a favorite friend, and dedicated co-worker. Whatever role Degly had in our lives however, I guarantee that we know this about Degly: he was a compassionate man who just wanted to make everyone happy. He always felt that he could lighten any situation with his cheerful personality, and that it helped to make people feel more comfortable.

When I think of Degly, I think of a man constantly in motion. Degly had so much vitality, that when he was around, the room was filled with enthusiasm immediately. Some of us here tonight have had the utmost pleasure of working with Degly throughout his eleven-year career at Union Bank of California. He so touched the lives of his many friends from the San Mateo, Redwood City, Menlo Park and ultimately, our San Carlos Office. We all looked forward to being with him everyday. He was one of a kind. Everyone he came in contact with loved him. Degly's sudden illness and untimely passing brought forth an incredible display of heartfelt emotion from his many San Carlos friends; unlike anything I've ever seen. Tears flowed freely. The message was constant "he was such a wonderful man", "a compassionate man", "truly a man with a heart of gold". He took the time to get to know each and every one of his friends. He would recall their joys, their sorrows, whatever was important to them.

Degly lived his life for his family. His dedication to his wife, Ana and his daughter Lesley was his number one priority. Degly often talked about how his and Ana's work encompassed seven days a week, but that was ok, they were living their "American Dream". After all, he was now a homeowner and a proud American citizen. Oh, what a happy day that was; the day he returned to the office after taking his oath as the newest American citizen, he was so thrilled to see we had the American flag so prominently displayed on his desk and his window station. He had great plans for the rest of their future and had now laid the foundation. He was so proud of who he was, where he was from, and where he was going. WE were so proud of him!

Degly reflected often on his mother and father. Always concerned of their well being at home in Guatemala. Calling them often just to send his love. He was so happy too, that his younger brothers and sister had done so well in life. He spoke often of the generosity of his Aunt Paz who shared his home, while he devoured the daily lunches she so lovingly prepared. His enthusiasm for his San Francisco Giants and his 49ers reverberated throughout our lunchroom as he listened in on the games or contributed his thoughts to any one of us sitting with him while listening to his favorite radio sports commentator.

Degly's precious Lesley. He would light up at the mere mention of her name. You see; Lesley was his jewel. "Oh, my Lesley!" he would say. He was so proud of her. His beautiful young daughter was becoming everything he hoped she'd be.

So you see, Degly's thoughts were always of others. In so doing, he has left his mark on each and every one of us. His mission is complete; let his message of human kindness be our inspiration.

Degly, such a humble man, and would be so deeply moved by everyone's presence here tonight; this is such a beautiful tribute to his legacy.

I once heard a poem of an Angel. I would like to share this with you now. While I mourn his loss, I take comfort in the fact that I believe Degly has moved on to a better place, and that he watches over us from the heavens above.

I am your Angel
Though I have moved on
Where all God's people go
I am there with you
But sometimes, you may not know
For I will be there in silence
I shall warm you in the night
A gentle touch to warm your soul
Or a beam of shining light
If I were a child, when I left
Then I'll be a smile for you
But if older in my passing
May strength and wisdom come through
For an Angel is there with you
And you will feel the love I bring

Degly, as much as I try, words cannot express how much we will miss you. Thank you for your friendship and the time you have spent with us. As you go to your eternal rest, be assured that you have earned your wings, and Degly, they are golden.
