John was the son of William L. Kerley & Sarah Jane (Hunt) Kerley. He was a young child when the family moved from Georgia to Randolph County, Alabama.
He married Adeline "Winnie" Elisabeth Cosper June 1860 in Randolph Co., AL and enlisted in the CSA 29 July 1861 and was in Company I, 14 AL Infantry until 9 Apr 1865. He was wounded in the Battle of Chancelerville, VA.
They moved to Bell Co., TX about 1875 and were farmers. Adeline died December 1927. They had eight children: Temetia Paroli, John William, Eleanor, Robert Lee, Pearce, Ben, Lon & Martha.
