S.M. Dixon Mustered Out.

S.M. Dixon died at his home in Independence last Friday morning of heart trouble after a short illness. Funeral services were held there Sunday by Rev. F.L. Pettit and the G.A.R. and the remains were brought to this city Sunday for burial in Oak Hill cemetery. The local G.A.R. held short services at the grave. A large number of friends followed the remains to the cemetery and offered their sympathy to the relatives.

Obituary.

Samuel Moke Dixon was born in Edgar county, Illinois Dec. 4th, 1842. At the age of 19 he entered the service of his country in defense of the Union in the 49th Ohio Infantry Volunteers. He served during the entire war; took part in many of the most important battles; received many wounds and spent almost a year in Andersonville prison.

At the close of the war he married Caroline Random; in which union was born 5 children; two of whom are dead, while Charles, Mrs. Edith Perkins and Mrs. Mabel Brightwell reside in Los Angeles, Calif. He came with his children from Fall River, Kansas to Elk City in 1891. He was married in 1891 to Mrs. Georgia Littleton, who together with her adopted daughter, survives him.

He lived in or near Elk City until 1913 when he came to Independence, Kans., where he died June 23, 1916 at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 19 days. He became a member of the Christian church some 30 years ago and was a firm believer in his Creator to the end. To those who knew him best his life was one of gentleness and devotion.
