Longtime Anchorage resident Elsie Ellen Yadon, 91, died Aug. 1, 2007, at Amber Bay Assisted Living Facility. A service was held at Life Church, 12245 Jerome St. A reception was afterward. Burial was at Angelus Memorial Park.

Ms. Yadon was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Marrowville, Kan., to Catherine Gray and Rob Roy Allan. After teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, she graduated from nurses training and began a career as a registered nurse in Idaho. In 1966, after she traveled with Frank Yadon on a mission trip to Peru, they were married and moved to Anchorage, where she worked in the Humana Hospital emergency room until her retirement. Her family wrote: "An independent and pioneering spirit, Ms. Yadon spent her life traveling around the world, connecting with her many friends, and coordinating the nursery at her home church. Affectionately known as 'Grandma' by neighbors and church members, she was celebrated for her cookies, her take-charge attitude, and her resilient, steadfast life. "Elsie once reminisced that it took an incredibly strong and courageous woman to live alone in Alaska, a task that she accomplished with dignity and honor. Her feisty spirit, warmth and strength will always be an inspiration to all who knew her."

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Ann Yadon of Talkeetna and Roger and Willow Yadon of Whitehorse, Yukon; grandchildren, Alicia Yadon, Angela Yadon, Frank Yadon, Ellen Stevens, Willow O'Brien and Roger Yadon; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Ms. Yadon was preceded in death by her husband, Frank. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Resource Agency at 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage 99507, or Tupelo Children's Mansion, P.O. Box 167, Tupelo, MS 38802.
