Company H, 9th Illinois Cavalry
Walter B. Anderson was a resident of Kewanee, Illinois, when he enlisted as a 1st Sergeant September 10, 1861. He was mustered into Company H, 9th Illinois Cavalry, October 17. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant November 10. 2nd Lieutenant Anderson resigned his commission May 26, 1862, and moved to Adrian, Michigan, to assist organizing the 4th Michigan Cavalry.
Company F, 4th Michigan Cavalry
Walter B. Anderson was a 29-year-old resident of Adrian, Michigan, when he enlisted at Detroit August 16, 1862. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant and mustered into Company F, 4th Michigan Cavalry, August 28. He was transferred to Company A in December 1862. 1st Lieutenant Anderson resigned his commission due to disability February 18, 1863, and headed west to California.
Company A, 7th California Infantry
Walter B. Anderson enlisted as a 1st Sergeant (veteran) at Sacramento October 12, 1864, and was mustered into Company A, 7th California Infantry. 1st Sergeant Anderson was posted to Arizona Territory where he was nominated as 2nd Lieutenant November 21, 1865, but never commissioned as such. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 13, 1866 (Orton, 767).
Walter applied for a Civil War veteran's disability pension in California January 13, 1885, and received application No. 529,847 and certificate No. 409,433. He eventually settled at Sacramento where he remained until he died.
