Joe A. Meier, 83, of Bismarck, formerly of Zeeland, died of congestive heart failure on Friday, May 23, 2008, at Medcenter One in Bismarck.

Joe was born on a farm northeast of Zeeland on Sept. 26, 1924, the son of Adam and Rosalia (Lacher) Meier. He attended rural school and was reared in the Zeeland and Venturia areas.

On Oct. 29, 1945, he married Frances Senger at Hague. They farmed in Zeeland and Hague areas until 1976. They moved to Zeeland, where they owned the Zeeland bar and later Joe drove the fuel truck for Wolf Oil Company.

Frances passed away in 1989. In 1999, Joe moved to Bismarck.

Joe loved his family and loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends playing cards, dominos, singing, dancing and just having fun. Joe was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Zeeland Lions Club, and he served on the Zeeland City Council.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rose May and Ray Hall of Bismarck; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Leo and Pam Meier of Hague and Tom and Kathy Meier of Lincoln; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and one sister, Anna Senger of Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Frances, one infant daughter, Josephine; four brothers, Adam, John, Frank and Ben; and five sisters, Mary Aberle, Eva Glatt, Katie Engelhart, Margaret Weigel and Rose Salwei.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Zeeland with Rev. Tom Feltman and Rev. Frank Miller officiating. Communion ministers were Kathy Meier and Frances Weigel. Organist was Michelle Schumacher. Scripture readers were Joseph Hall and Brent Meier. Gift bearers were Leo Meier, Tom Meier and Rose May Hall. Mass servers were Ben Meier and Colin Weigel.

Casketbearers were Joseph Meier, Derrick Meier, Jesse Meier, Brent Meier, Joseph Hall and Melissa Legler.

Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Zeeland, under the direction of Myers Funeral Home of Linton.
