Elijah was born in 1740, the fourth child of Hannah and Rev. Dunbar in Stroughton, (Now Canton) He married Sarah Hunt in Stoughton, MA December 29, 1762. The marriage was performed by his father, the Rev. Samuel Dunbar.

Long known in the walks of public & private life;
by the suffrages of his fellow citizens often elevated
to offices of honour & trust; & for many years
sustaining the office of a Deacon in the
Church of Christ in this place.
While weeping friends bend o'er his silent tomb,
Recount his virtues and their loss deplore,
Faith's piercing eye darts through the dreary gloom,
And hails him blest where tears shall flow no more.
