Albert Taylor Rice was born 13 Nov 1824 in Morgan Co., Ala. He was a son of James Rice and Jane Smith Rice who emigrated to Texas in 1840. Both received land grants as early settlers, first in Houston County and then apparently cut off into Anderson County. Later he moved to McLennan County for three years, then settled in Henderson County for 19 years. He moved to Kaufman County on the Van Zandt County line in 1870.

He married 1st Elizabeth A. Cartwright b. 1836, d. 1874; and second Mrs. Sarah Morris on 6 Jul 1876 in Henderson County. He was 2nd Lt in Capt E.D. McKellar's Company, Henderson County Reserve Militia. A muster roll of this company is in the Athens' courthouse. He also enrolled 1 Jul 1846 in Capt. Cadys Company Texas Mounted Volunteers as a private in the Mexican War.
