Eloise Weeks Crosswhite, 90, of Salem, died Friday morning, May 30, 2008, at Carilion New River Hospital, Radford, Virginia. Mrs. Crosswhite was born September 11, 1917, in Floyd County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack C. Crosswhite, a professional baseball player and a 1993 inductee into the Roanoke-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame, and a grandson, Gary E. Drewry. She is survived by five children, Jack Crosswhite and wife, Bettie, Radford, Va., Connie Sinha and husband, Birandra, of Cary, N.C., Carolyn Drewry of Knoxville, Tenn., Anita Steenwerth and husband, Jim, of Del Mar, Calif., and Robert Crosswhite and wife, Linda, of Richmond , Va. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Crosswhite was a long time member of the First Christian Church in South Salem. She was an active member of the Loyal Daughters Class. She taught elementary school for 32 years in the Salem School District. Mrs. Crosswhite was a strong advocate for education in public schools. She was respected and often recognized in the community by her former students. Mrs. Crosswhite was active in professional organizations including the VEA and the NEA. She was also an active member of the DAR and the UDC for many years, as well as many other organizations. Some of Mrs. Crosswhite's favorite pastimes included traveling the world, reading and handicrafts. She left many fine works of needlepoint and candle wicking to be enjoyed by her family.
