Frances "Linda" Maria (Skinner) Hipps was born June 24, 1949, at Sturgis to parents Merton Vincent (Bud) & Beverly Mary (Ricard) Skinner. She was the eldest of five siblings, Sandra Kay, Mary Dale, Carol Ann, and Gary Lee.
Linda attended kindergarten at Garfield Elementary School in Rapid City. Her family moved to Sturgis where she attended St. Martin's Academy from 1955 - 1963. When Linda finished eighth grade, it was the last graduating eighth grade class at the Sturgis, St. Martin's Academy. She attended Sturgis High School from 1963 - 1967 graduating in 1967.
Linda met the love of her life (John Hipps) the summer of 1966, and they were engaged on Valentine's Day 1967. John and Linda were married July 28, 1967. They lived in Rapid City until 1968 when John was stationed in Simbach, Germany.
The couple moved back to Sturgis after John's tour of duty was completed in Germany and he was discharged from the service. John attended Black Hills State University for a short time until their only daughter Jana was born Nov. 25, 1971, (Thanksgiving Day) at Bennet Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Rapid City.
The Hipps family moved to Faith in November 1972, where John took a job with Lynn's Super Valu, Inc. In 1979, the couple purchased the Faith Independent newspaper. Linda won many awards in writing, photography, advertising and general excellence during her 18 year tenure as publisher of the Faith Independent. John and Linda sold the newspaper in November 1997, and moved back to Sturgis. Linda worked part time as the executive director of the Sturgis Area Arts Council until she was hospitalized on Oct. 20, 2000.
Linda is survived by her husband, John Hipps of Sturgis; daughter, Jana Hipps of Sturgis; Step-father, Jack Frost of Sturgis; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Eileen Skinner of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Bob Reed of Alpine, Texas, Carol and Ron Moore of Buffalo, Minn.
