Her obituary, transcribed by her great granddaughter from an unidentified newspaper clipping reads:
"A long and happy married life has been brought to a close, and a hitherto unbroken family circle entered by the messenger of death. Mrs Frances Caldwell Mclntosh, wife of Dr. James Mclntosh, died after a lingering illness on the night of the 23rd (sic) instant.
"Mrs. Mclntosh was born on the 19th of January 1837. She was the daughter of the late Frances M. and Elizabeth (Caldwell) Higgins. She was a member of the Newberry Baptist Church, having united with that church on the 1st of October 1864. She was married to Dr. James Mclntosh on the 25th of November by the Rev. J. J. Brantley, D.D. She was born, was married, and died at the family homestead where she had lived from her childhood to the close of her life.
"The recollection of all this was doubtless consoling to her during her last illness, as she had inherited from her ancestors a tenacious veneration for everything connected with the traditions and history of her family. She had received the best education the county could afford , having been taught at Newberry, at Salem, N.C., and at Charleston, S.C. Her naturally bright intellect was well cultivated. She was a close observer of passing events, was fond of reading, and having an excellent memory, it may well be supposed that her mind was nurtured with useful information. She was especially accurate in her knowledge of history. She wrote and conversed with ease and facility, always using appropriate and expressive language.
"There was not in Newberry a more hospitable or happy home than that over which she presided, and from which she has just been removed, and probably no family circle more free from the sombre clouds of misfortune. She enjoyed in high degree the attentions and affection of her husband and the beautiful love and obedience of all her children. Yet she resigned all this earthly happiness without a murmur, exhibiting during her entire illness, a calm and peaceful submission to the will of God. She passed away in the full possession of her faculties, only conscious of her approaching end, giving to all who saw her the fullest evidence of her complete assurance of her salvation and happiness beyond the grave."
