"DROWNED: News comes from Gardiner that Arthur Johnson of Sweet creek was drowned in the Umpqua yesterday afternoon. He was working at the Gardiner Mill Co's logging camp and was out in a boat alone at the time. It is not known how the accident occurred. The body was recovered."(1)

Arthur J. Johnson was the son of Laurence Robert and Emma (Baupre) Johnson. He was born in July of 1866 or 1868 (records differ) in Forestville, Ontario. He was married to Alice Jane King in Martin Co., Minnesota. Alice, born about 1864 in Minnesota, was the daughter of Robert and Margaret King; Robert was from England and Margaret was from Ireland.

Arthur and Alice lived in Iowa, where two sons were born, then moved to Oregon, where the other children were born. They settled first at Glenada, and then moved to a homestead on Sweet Creek, next to his brother Lucian's homestead. Other Johnson siblings, and their parents, settled nearby. The children born to Arthur and Alice Johnson were Roy, Earl, Alma, Robert, William, and John.

Life up in the hills must have been very nice because on one visit to Florence in the summer of 1897, the newspaper noted: "He [Arthur] likes ranching so well that he gets homesick in almost no time when away from his ranch."(2) Other mentions include this one in 1898: "Arthur Johnson, a former resident of Glenada but now of Sweet creek, had the misfortune to loose two cows and a calf (all he had) from larkspur."(3)

In 1899 when Arthur's brother William passed away, the local newspaper had the following mention: "Arthur Johnson and family came down from their home on Sweet Creek to see his brother. They were none too soon as he bade them all the last farewells the next day."(4)

Arthur drowned, as noted above, on 21 September 1905 in Gardiner. His widow Alice died on 11 July 1912 in Douglas County. At the time of her death her estate consisted of the Johnson land far up Sweet Creek, which her son Earl purchased from the estate. Oldest son Roy was appointed guardian of his minor siblings.
