Ephraim Coon was part of a large family that lived in both Dutchess County, New York, and Litchfield County, Connecticut. Ephraim's father was Sylvanus Coon. His mother was unknown. Ephraim was born in Dutchess County, New York. Some sources give a slightly different birth year. I am relying on the cemetery gravestone transcription don by the local genealogical society.
Just before 1810 his family moved to Litchfield, CT. However, Ephraim was soon back in Dutchess County, New York, where on 21 July 1814, he enlisted as a Private in the War of 1812 under Col. Robert Bogardue. According to his enlistment record Ephraim was 5 feet one inch tall. During the War he helped defend New York City Harbor (Dorothy Crooks). He was discharged with the end of his term June 17, 1815. After the war he married Marana Knapp, who was from from Litchfield County, CT. About 1815 they moved to Manlius, Onondaga County, New York. In 1818 Ephraim received a bounty land grant of 160 acres in Knox County, Illinois, as a reward for his wartime service. It is believed that he sold the land and never lived there.
Ephraim and wife Marana had four children. In the late 1820's they moved to Mendon, Monroe County, New York. In 1844 they moved again, this time across the country to the pioneer settlement of Palmyra, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
Excerpts from Ephraim Coon's 1866 will filed in Jefferson Co., WI court:
"I Ephraim Coon, of the Town of Palmyra, County of Jefferson, State of Wisconsin, being of sound mind and memory and mindful of the uncertainties of human life do make & publish & declare this my last will and testament in manner following...I give and bequeath unto my son Miles W. Coon of Palmyra the sum of Fifty dollars...unto my daughter Mary E. Strong of...Waukesha County, Wisconsin, the sum of Fifty dollars...unto my daughter Caroline Brisbin of ...Michigan the sum of Fifty dollars...All the rest, residue and remainder of all my estate...I give and bequeath unto my son Hiram E. Coon of Palmyra...I...nominate and appoint my son Hiram E. Coon of Palmyra as the executor of my will....this 14th day of March, 1866. (signed Ephraim Coon)"

The family can be tracked through the U.S. Census records. In addition to his father, Sylvanus, Ephraim Coon had several siblings: Seneca Coon, 1793-abt 1861 (Seneca also served in the War of 1812); Pauline Coon Knapp, John Coon, and David Coon. Older brother, Seneca, also had a large family of his own, including three sons, Milton Coon, Leander Coon, and Elisha Coon.

In the 1830 Census Sylvanus Coon is shown living in Mendon very near his son Ephraim. Sylvanus, who was then in his 60's, died in New York soon after. Ephraim Coon's wife Marana Knapp Coon died 1831 in Mendon. Her burial site was Honeoye Falls Cemetery in Mendon, NY, but she also has a cenotaph in Palmyra, Wisconsin.

In the 1840 Census for Mendon he is living with one male also in his forties, probably his brother Seneca. Also in the household is a teenaged male, probably Seneca's youngest son, Elisha W. In 1844 Ephraim and his family moved to Wisconsin, but Seneca and his wife Jane stayed behind in New York and are shown living in Genesee County, NY, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

According to Ephraim's will he had only four children: Hiram, Miles, Mary, and Caroline. A 'Milton Coon,' an 'Elisha Coon' and a 'Leander Coon' lived near Ephraim's family in Palmyra. They were his brother Seneca's sons. Ephraim's will was written 17 Mar 1866 and proven 1 Mar 1869 so his death was in 1868, not 1864 as erroneously recorded in the family Bible record.
