He was a beloved speaker at statewide horticultural events.

Fred was a well known Twin Cities personality, hosting the Home and Garden Show with Loren Kohnen on KSTP talk radio. He frequently appeared on KSTP news and on the Home and Garden Network. He appeared in his own PBS series "Eat It Up" in the 1970s. In his retirement, Fred was delighted to serve as horticultural advisor at Bachman's Inc. Fred was married for forty years to his wife Elizabeth "Beth" Matson. They raised their daughters Carolyn and Lila alongside five foster children Loan, My, Nonny, Quan & Tom. Fred served as a father figure to many other children who often found refuge working beside him in his garden and enjoying the family table where his legendary meals were served. He will be missed greatly by his grandchildren Steven, Roger, Fliss & Matson.

His funeral service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lyndale Avenue South and 42nd Street on Thursday, June 5th, at 11am. Private family interment at Lakewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Breck School for the Teacher's Sabbatical Fund, or to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Foundation.
