Nearby officers heard the shots and located the suspect, who then opened fire on them. The officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. The man then shot and killed himself before officers were able to take him into custody.
Officer Bahr's body was located approximately 15 minutes later.
Officer Bahr had served with the Fredericksburg Police Department for 2 years and had previously served as an auxiliary officer.
He is survived by his wife, Stefanie Rose Bahr; his parents, Delbert and Kathy Bahr of Stafford County; a sister, Trisha Byrd, and her husband, Tim, of Port Orchard, Wash.; his in-laws, Paul and Verna Rose of Spotsylvania County; two sisters-in-law, Paula Finneyfrock and her husband, Claude, of Orange County and Nora Hall and her husband, Lee, of Spotsylvania; two nephews, Joshua and Andrew; and a niece, Alicia.
He is a 1986 graduate of Stafford High School. He also attended Hartwood Elementary School and Gayle Middle School in Stafford.
