Born to Prince Dimitri Alexandrovich Obolensky (1882-1964) and Countess Maria Shuvalov (1894-1973) in one of the richest families in Russia. They could trace their lineage back to St Vladimir, who introduced Christianity to Kiev Russia in 988. He attended preparatory school in England, then he was educated at the Lycee Pasteur in Paris, and then came to Cambridge where he studied languages. At Cambridge he finished his doctorate and was elected a Fellow of Trinity college, Cambridge 1942-48. Some time in the 1940-s he went to Oxford, where he took up the Chair of Russian and Balkan History. FBA 1974; Kt 1984. He published a book of memoires 'Bread of Exile'.
