Dr. M. Frank Bass, Jr. age 83, of Columbus, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the Hamilton House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A funeral service will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with a visitation at the funeral home one hour before the service. A private burial will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. Dr. Jimmy Elder will officiate. Dr. Bass was born August 26, 1924 in Fairfax, AL, the son of Marion Frank Bass, Sr. and Travis Jacobs Bass, and was raised by his grandmother, Ida Bass. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre. Dr. Bass received his pre-dentistry education at Auburn University, where he was a life alumni member, and earned his D.D.S. degree from Emory University in 1952 where he was a member of the Psi Omega dental fraternity. Dr. Bass was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association and the Western District Dental Society where he was named an honorable fellow. He was a former member of the Jaycees and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He practiced general dentistry in Columbus for 48 years until his retirement in 2001. His hobbies were farming, hunting, fishing and traveling. Dr. Bass was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Marie Bass, and is survived by his wife, Virginia Osborne Bass of Columbus; a daughter and son-in-law, Claire and Jim Mumbrauer of Columbus; granddaughter, Laura Lay of Charleston, SC; step-grandchildren, Ashley and Andrew Mumbrauer, both of Butler.
