Bertha was born on March 11, 1914 in Kimball, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Joe and Sarah (Milan) Lane.

A devout Christian, Bertha is most remembered for good natured spirit and her love for God. For many years, Bertha was a member of Parsley Bottom Free Will Baptist Church in Lenore. In later years, she would be a member of the Eckman Church of God, in Kimball.

She was married three times, twice widowed. Her first husband was Charles Ooten. They had a son, Charles Ooten, Jr. He would be Bertha's only child. Tragically, he died when he was a young man. Several years after her son's death, Bertha would lose her husband. Both father and son are buried on a hillside which is part of the Ooten Cemetery at Trace Creek, near Delbarton, in Mingo County, West Virginia.

Bertha later married Wallace Baisden, of Baisdentown. He was the son of John B. and Zella (Branham) Baisden. Wallace was born in 1897, died in 1971 and was buried at the Baisden Family Cemetery at Baisdentown, near Lenore, in Mingo County, West Virginia. For several years after Wallace's death, she lived in the home they shared at Baisdentown. Later, she sold the property and moved for a time to Parsley Bottom.

Around 1978, Bertha returned to her hometown of Kimball and married Andrew Katona, a widower. They lived in the community of Bottom Creek near Kimball for the next 23 years. Bertha passed away at their home on June 2, 2001 at the age of 87.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband, Andy; a sister, Martha Lambert of Pennsylvania, two step-sons, Jack Katona and Andrew Katona, Jr., both of Princeton, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Bertha's funeral was held at Widener Funeral Home on Main Street in Kimball on June 4, 2001. She was entombed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bluewell, West Virginia.

Bertha's third husband survived her by almost 5 years. Andrew Katona died on April 14, 2006 at the age of 90. When he died he was entombed alongside his first wife, Anna (Bohin) Katona.
