Raymond Hobert Stapler was the son of Mattie Black through an unwed relationship. When Raymond was a young boy, his mother married widower William Silas Stapler; and at that time, Raymond took on the surname "Stapler".

He married Mary Lee "Mae" Vann, daughter of Ira Thomas and Lillie Whitaker Vann; and to this union was born children, Homer Eugene, Raymond Hobert "Junior", Mildred Louise (Lemley), Luther Eural, Arthur Olin, Oscar Leon, Oather Thomas, and Barbara Ann (Phillips).Raymond and Mary were also the parents of baby girl, Betty Jane, who died in infancy.
