Rites Saturday for Luther Abernethy
Saturday afternoon at three o'clock a group of devoted friends and relatives gathered in the Chapel of the Barry Funeral Home to pay final tribute to Luther Little Abernethy, retired business man and disabled veteran of World War I, who died Friday night at his apartment following a long illness. The rites were conducted by the Rev. B L Mohon, pastor of the Okolona Baptist Church. The Baptist Church choir, with Buddy Hill as Accompanist, sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus".

Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery with Barry in Charge. The pallbearers were E H Latimer, George Bean, P Brooks Holt, Tom O. Brooks and Arthur W Quinn.

Mr. Abernethy, a son of the late Irvin V Abernethy, a former State Representative, and the late Mrs. Mary Laughlin Abernethy, was born on July 11 1892, and lived here all his life.

In 1917, he volunteered with the Headquarters Company of the Second Mississippi Infantry. He served overseas as a Battalion Sergeant Major with a Medical Unit of the 39th division. Among the first to return to the United States following the Armistice, he arrived in Newport News on January 1 1919, aboard the Transport Princess Matoika which brought home 3000 soldiers. He was never completely well after coming home. He operated a dry cleaning business for a number of years. About 15 years ago he was forced, by failing health, to retire.

He was a member of the Okolona Baptist Church and during his youth he was awarded a pin for 13 years of perfect attendance at Sunday School, a record no other member of the church equaled.

Before having to give up most activities because of ill health, Luther was active in church, social and civic affairs. He was endowed with a kind, charitable disposition and had a host of friends among people in all walks of life and of all ages.

He leaves a brother, O B Abernethy, three sisters, Mrs. O R Clarke, Mrs. H C Hume of Owensboro , Kentucky , and Mrs. Winston H Murphree of Florence, Alabama, and Ok
