Richard Dale Finn, 83, of Austin, Minnesota, died on Friday, April 29, 2005, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in January 1949. He had been on kidney dialysis for over three years.
A memorial Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, May 3, at the Church of St. Edward in Austin, with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Interment was in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Richard was born on September 10, 1921 in Belmond, the son of James and Ida (Jacobs) Finn. He graduated from the Belmond High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
Richard married Earlene VanBuskirk at the St. Francis Church in Belmond on January 31, 1948. They farmed in Iowa for six years before moving to Dexter in 1954 where they farmed for eighteen years. They moved to Austin in 1972. Richard was the postmaster in Dexter for 25 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #91 and V.F.W. Post #1216 in Austin. Earlene taught elementary school in Austin for 27 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frances, Howard, Merlin, Clair and Orland; and sister, Lenore Deml.
Richard is survived by his wife; daughters, Betty Kalmes of Winona and Mary Finn of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Patrick (Kelly) Kalmes of West Bend, Wisconsin and Leanne and Paul Kalmes of Winona; brother, Roger (Mary) Finn of Boise, Idaho; sister, Peggy Halverson of Belmond; and two sisters-in-law.
