Thomas Alexander Balch, long time resident of this community and an important figure in agriculture circles here for many years, died at the Greeley Hospital Saturday morning, Oct 8, 1938, his 80th birthday. Mr Balch suffered a stroke with paralysis about 10 days ago and has been in failing condition since. Until that time, he was in splendid health despite his advanced years.
Mr Balch was born Oct 8, 1858 at Pleasant Prairie, IL. In 1908, he moved to the Greeley District and farmed at Ashton, Lucerne, and Pleasant Valley. After his retirement, he moved to Greeley for 12 years, later returning to his Pleasant Valley farm where he lived with his daughter, Miss Mabel Balch and son, Harry Balch. During eight of those years spent in Greeley proper, Mr Balch served as a member of the School Board. He has been a member of the Greeley/Loveland Irrigation Company's board and at the time of his death was serving as President of the Federal Land Bank Loan Association. He has been a member of that board for many years. Mr Balch has been a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church and for many years and up until the time of his death was an Elder at First Church in Greeley.
Surviving Mr Balch are: one daughter, Mabel E Balch; and four sons, Max, Harry, and Mort Balch, all of Greeley and well known here, and Wilbur Balch of Berkeley, CA; one brother, Robert E Balch of Mattoon, IL; one sister,Mrs J N Faris of Portland, OR; a niece, Mrs Lester Adams of Pleasant Valley, CO; and several grandchildren. Mr Balch's wife died several years ago.
Funeral services will be held from the First Presbyterian Church in Greeley, the date not yet set pending word from out-of-state relatives. Macys are in charge.
