William Binder Was a veteran of the Civil War, serving over a period of 3 years. He participated in the battle at Gettysburg, while a member of the 26th Emergency Regiment. This unit was attacked by the First Virginia Cavalry.One year later, he was with the 197th Regiment of Pennsylvania and was sent to Rock Island in the Mississippi River to perform garrison duty where 10,000 Confederate prisoners were held. In 1865 he was with Co E of the 105th, known as the "Wildcat Regiment". It was with this regiment that he participated in the siege of Peterburg, the pursuit of General Lee and his army, and finally his ssurrender at Appomatox Courthouse. At the conclusion of each of his three enlistments, he was honorably discharged. William Binder was in the newspaper business his entire life and was the publisher of the "The Daily Ledger" in Pottstown for 54 years.
