SOUTHWICK - Arthur J. Redfern, 80, of 131 Feeding Hills Road, a former Planning Board member and civic leader, died Wednesday at home.
He was the founder of the Southwick Rotary Club and was awarded its Paul Harris fellowship. He was the inititiator of the Senior Center, a member of the Grange, and an original member of the Agawam Sportmen's Club in Agawam.
He worked at Wico Electric Co. of Springfield and previously for Springfield Sugar Co. for 18 years.
Born in the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee, he graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield. A Marine Corps veteran of the Pacific Theater in World War II he saw action in the 1945 invasion of Okinawa.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Lake Church and a member of the American Legion Post 338.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, the former Shirley Lortie; a daughter, Margerette Berg of Palm Court, Fla; a sister, Gertrude Turner of Springfield; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday morning at Southwick-Forastiere Funeral Home and the church, with burial in Hillcrest Park Mausoleum. Calling hours are this afternoon and evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Foundation for Children in care of the Rotary Club, P.O. Box 701, Southwick, MA 01077.
