Zadock was the son of Nathan and Betsey {Buffington} Putnam of Sutton, Worcester County, Mass. He was also the great-grandson of Deacon Edward Putnam of Salem Village, Essex, Mass. (present day Danvers). Zadock and Abigail {Elliott} Putnam had the following children: Abigail b. 1775, John b. 1778, George Washington b. 1780 and Lewis b. 1782. As sergeant, Zadock responded to the Lexington Alarm as fifer and in 1777 in Capt. Joseph Warren's company.
