17 July 1863. The men of the 27th were offered Medals of
Honor to extend the enlistment for a short period to protect the capitol. Less than half of the men extended,
but through a clerical error the medal was awarded to the
entire regiment. A review board revoked all the medals,
including those of men who did extend, as it was decided
that extending one's enlistment did not meet the criteria
for the award. Walter Eaton was not one of the men who
extended.
