H.S. Tavshanjian, was an Armenian rug importer who was murdered in Union Square, NYC ,by a member of the Hunchakist, an Armenian society who was trying to extort money from wealthy Armenians in this country to send back home. Tavshanjian and his family were threatened to pay $5,000 or else. Tavshanjian was quoted as saying that he would prefer to be killed than to give money to a cause that would end up in murder of more of his countryman. At the time of his assaination, a Miss Trixie Jennery,a toe dancer who was crossing the street at that time was within two feet of the victim when the shots were fired. She helped police identify the assassin. He had two little girls, ages 5 and 3,that he left behind.
