'Strawberry Man' Ben Beam Dies Thursday

Benjamin H. Beam, 93, of 2722 E. 17th, died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday at Bartholomew County Hospital.

He also helped to operate the family business, the former Pine Shade Dairy here, and had worked as an agent for the Diamond Oil Co., had operated a grocery store and gas station at McClure and 17th, and had worked at Simmen's Hardware Store until his retirement in 1964. He also farmed in the Flat Rock area.

A private funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Dallas J. Collier Saturday at Reed and Jewell Funeral Home where persons may call until 8 o'clock tonight and from 10 a.m. Saturday until noon. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Beam was born in Bartholomew County Oct. 16, 1888, the son of Samuel and Sarah Gibson Beam. He married Lessie Romine Sept. 26, 1916, at Columbus. She preceded him in death July 13, 1950.

The last survivor of 13 children, Beam served with the Army in France during World War I. He was an accomplished musician and played the trumpet during his time in the Army and also participated in the American Legion band here. He attended Purdue University Dairy School.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Veterans of World War I and the American Legion.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Ridenour, also of 2722 E. 17th; two nephews, J. Howard Beam of Columbus and Morris Burns of Whispering Pines, N.C., and four nieces, Mrs. Claude Knoy and Laura and June Yockey of Columbus, and Rosemary Deering of El Monte, Calif.
