Robert Alton was born in Antwerp, the son of Frank and Maude Render Alton. He was a graduate of Antwerp High School and Potsdam Normal School and held a master's degree in education. He taught in schools in St. Lawrence county was principal of Fowler Elementary School and later East Side Elementary School in Gouverneur. He retired in 1976 after a 38 year career.
He was survived by his wife, three daughters, eight grandchildren and a sister.
