FREEZING RAIN CAUSED CRASH FATAL TO STRUTHERS YOUTH
A freezing rain which made travel treacherous was blamed for the three-vehicle accident which killed a Struthers youth and critically injured his two Youngstown companions, all classmates in a Cleveland barber school, Monday morning.
Robert Convery, 19, of 23 Tod Lane, and Joseph Dale Barta, also 19, of 35 S. Belle Vista Ave., are in very critical condition in Geauga Community Hospital with severe internal and head injuries.
Charles Kuhns, 18, of 42 Wilson St., Struthers, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Dr. Alton Bean, Geauga County coroner, said Kuhns died of a fractured skull.
The three youths were returning to class at Cleveland after a weekend at home. Barta was driving a 1953 Ford west on Route 422 about 1 1/2 miles west of Auburn Center Road at 7:35 a.m. when the accident occurred.
Geauga County Deputy Sheriff Jack Minman said a tractor-trailer driven by Robert Pellow, 37, of 7807 Grand Division Ave., Cleveland, was headed east. As the truck went over a hilltop, it met the Barta car, spinning sideways on the slippery pavement. A Volkswagen driven by Albert Chrow, 32, of Chagrin Falls, slammed into the rear of the truck and went under the trailer. Both Chrow and Pellow are in good condition in the hospital with cuts on the hands and legs.
