Wallace James Cassady, was named for his maternal grandfather. Known throughout his life as Wally, he was born Thursday, November 26, 1964. Wally was the first of two children of Samuel Cassady and Marjorie (Dempsey) Cassady.

Wally's early life was spent in the Williamson area of Mingo County, West Virginia, touted as "The Heart of the Billion Dollar Coalfield". When his parents divorced, Wally, and his younger sister, Greta, lived with their mother, a well-respected English teacher at Williamson High School.

Wally attended public schools. A popular student, he was friendly and well liked by everyone who knew him. He graduated with honors in 1983 from Williamson High School. After graduation, he left the coalfields of southern West Virginia for the U.S. Air Force Academy, nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. He graduated from the academy four years later, in 1987. He later furthered his studies at Wake Forest University, and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

After completing his education, Wally began working with Lockheed Martin, an advanced technology company with the majority of its business connected to the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as other U.S. federal government agencies.

Suffering with diabetes, Wally fell ill and died on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wallace and Opal Dempsey.

At the time of his death he was survived by his beloved mother Marjorie Cassady, now retired and living in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; sister, Greta Jones, of Germantown, North Carolina; niece, Jordan Jones; nephew, Luke Jones; and two aunts, Gloria Dempsey of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Walla Lynn Dempsey, of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

At 11 o'clock on the morning of Monday, January 7, 2008, friends and family members gathered to say goodbye to Wally, recalled as the loving and dutiful big brother who would hold his sister's hand to keep her safe as they walked to school as children. His service was held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Silas Creek Chapel, with Dr. Gary Chapman officiating.

After the service, the procession made its way into Parklawn Memorial Park where Wally was entombed at the mausoleum.

Wally's family asked that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 222 South Church Street, Suite 336 M, Charlotte, North Carolina 28202.
