I never knew my grandmother, but I've heard stories of how she loved to laugh. She was a master seamstress and very creative. She was a hard worker taking in laundry to make ends meet during the Depression years. She died after a two year battle with cancer.

Mrs. Mae Odom, City Resident 17 Years, Dies

Mrs. Mae Odom, 51, resident of Shawnee for 17 years, died at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday at her home in Golden Acres addition. She had been in failing health for the past two years.

Mrs. Odom, a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and a community needle club, came to Shawnee with her family in 1926 from Okmulgee, and had resided here since that time.

She is survived by her husband, Sam Odom, and a son, Bobby Dean Odom, both of the family home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Gilkey, Rockville, Missouri; and two brothers, George Gilkey, Rockville, and Ed Gilkey, Seminole.

Funeral Services will be at 9 a.m. today in St. Benedict's Catholic church, with Father Benedict Ryan, pastor, officiating, and burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Bearers will be Max Roethler, W. H. Carter, Jack Lavell, B. W. Dierker, W. J. Byron and Charles Unzer. Roesch Brothers are in charge.
