Leopold I Berchtold studied philosophy and law in Olomouc and in Vienna. He then lived abroad for 17 years, and with the exception of Russia and the Scandinavian countries, he travelled over entire Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. During his travels he was interested in many scientific lines and in the political situation, and he became a member of many learned societies. He spoke several languages and was exceptionally hard-working. He used all the acquired knowledge in his administration of the Buchlov estate. He introduced new methods in orchanrds and vineyards, he founded schools, supported orphans and the poor, he provied labor for his serfs etc. However, the main sphere of his interst was to educate the people in matters of health and health care, and he finally founded a hospital in Buchlovice. When there was a need for more beds, the count provided the lower castle of the Buchlovice and with his family moved to Buchlov. The hospital did not admit the "noble" people only, but also the serfs, people from Buchlovice estate, for instance, in 1808 there were 887 patient there. In the end, Leopold Berchtold paid for his philantropic medical activities with his own life, he was infected in the hospital in Velehrad by soldiers lying there with infections diseases after the battle near Aspern. After his death the hospital ceased to exist, his heirs were not interested in it, especially becouse Leopolds broad-minded activities had loaded the estate with debts.

Yet in 1837, Frantisek Palacky wrote about Leopold Berchtold hat "the memory of this man shining in the annals of moral culture like a star of the first class, among the Salvs, to whom he belonged, deserves to be revived"
