He enlisted in Capt Campbell's Siege Artillery in early 1863, but was transferred to Company B of the 29th GA Cav. Part of his unit was captured in battle and the rest sent back to Bainbridge on guard duty and discharged in 1865.

J. E. Thursby is listed as a veteran whose pension application was returned for corrections in the Bainbridge Post Searchlight newspaper, Aug. 3, 1901 p. 4. In the Ga Archives virtual vault he has pension application on line. He says he was born in 1835 in Wilkerson (Wilkinson?) County, Ga. He enlisted in May 1863 with Captain Campbell's Siege Artillery in Bainbridge, but was transferred to Company E of the 29th Cavalry in October 1863. Part of his unit was captured and the rest scattered in 1864. He was in the later group and was placed on detail service near Bainbridge until the war ended.
