Curtis was the son of Eli Terrell Gray and Nancy Jane Armstrong. In 1873 in Western Grove, Newton County, Arkansas, Curtis married Martha C. Jones. In the same year their only child, Charles, was born, 1775, sadly Martha died at the early age of 16 years, 3 months and 11 days. Curtis' second wife whom he married about 1776 was M. Tennessee LNU. She too died young at the age of 24. Curtis married for the third and last time Virginia Lee "Jennie" Osborn, 18 July 1886. His three wives are buried next to him in Western Grove Cemetery.
