Daughter of Anna Matilda Pearson (Piersson)of New York and Edward Beck, a native of Wurzburg, Germany, Vy grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated from David B. Oliver High School, Lenox School of Nursing in New York City, attended New York University and completed a post-graduate course in Anesthesia at King's County Hospital in New York City. She headed west to California in about 1948 where she became an anesthetist nurse at Cottage Hospital. She met and married Philip G. Jones in 1950 and continued in her work until about 1983. She raised two children.
