Virginia S. Flohr Irwin, 81, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus.

Virginia grew up in Madison, Ind., and graduated from West Madison High School in 1945; she worked at Camp Atterbury at the end of WWII and Commonwealth Insurance Company and later retired from Cummins Engine Company, Inc.

She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Brown County; she loved music and singing, belonging to the ladies' gospel quartets, The Candlelighters, Sheltered, The Hallelujah Belles, The Silver Tones and The Kitchen Band.

Virginia was born in Kent, Ind., Oct. 16, 1926, the daughter of William P. and Sarah M. Smith Helton.

She married Richard A. Flohr Sr. on July 11, 1946; he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1993. She later married Max T. Irwin on Sept. 11, 2002.

Survivors include her second husband; a son: Rick (Debra) Flohr of Seymour, Ind.; daughters: Patricia (Larry) Billman of Edinburgh, Ind., Jeri (Tom) Day of Nashville, Ind., Sara Calhoun of Columbus, Ind., and Faye (Jim) Bailey of Glasgow; stepchildren: Max (Pam) Irwin Jr. of Arizona and Sandra Bower of Florida; grandchildren: Rebekah (Patrick) Reuter, Emily (Jason) Brooks, Christopher (Sherry) Billman, David Billman, Jennifer (Maury) Gonzales, Valerie (Matthew) Houpey, Darrick (Genevieve) Day, Beth Ann (Kenny) Lewis, Janie (Dan) Lucas and Larry (Nikki) Calhoun Jr.; step grandchildren: Chad (Tonya) Bower, Carrie (Kevin) Lawrence and Jacqui Irwin; great-grandchildren: Avery, Claire and Jared Brooks, Cheyenne and Thomas Houpey, Violet Day, Colton and Sawyer Lewis, Sara Beth Mings, Megan and Dan Lucas, Josh and Caleb Calhoun; great-great-grandson: Tristin Leggins; brother: Prince Helton of Plainfield, Ind.; sister: Etta Helton of Florida; and her best friend, Ellie Mae.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, a grandson, Jared Edward Flohr; great-granddaughter, Grace Flohr Brooks; brothers, Paul and Earl Helton; and a sister, Cynthia Burchfield.

Entombment was at Garland Brook Mausoleum.
