"Ed" was born to Eligia/Elijah and Mary Elizabeth (Cisney) Gossett in Greenville, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky on Apr 8, 1872. Mary was the daughter of Robert A. and Nancy J. (Sullivan) Cisney.

Ed was the second child of three from this marriage and was the only boy. He also had three half-sisters from Elijah's first marriage.

Ed married Willie Alice Dunning/Howard on Aug 4, 1898 in Muhlenberg County. She was the daughter of John William Dunning and Hannah J.W. "Jennie" Glass. "Alice" was never adopted by her mother's second husband, but she frequently flip-flopped between using Dunning or Howard as her surname.

Alice wasn't the only one who used various combinations of her names, though. Ed went by John W., William E., W.E., or Ed during his lifetime. Only on his death certificate did he end up being shown as John William Edward Gossett.

Ed and Alice raised their family of seven on a farm in Belton, Kentucky. Their children were: Aultha E., Alpha L., Millie B., Drucie Jane, Bernard Melvin, Clemon Modelle and Milton Earl.

Ed died Christmas morning, 1935 at home on his farm in Belton. Alice and the five younger children moved to Toledo, Ohio in the early-mid 1940's.
