J.B. Oney, 95, of Prestonville, KY., died on Wednesday morning, June 25, 2008 at his daughters residence in Hanover, IN.

James Blanton "J.B." Oney, 95, of Prestonville, Carroll Co., KY., died on Wednesday morning, June 25, 2008 at his daughters residence in Hanover, IN.


He was a Graduate of Hazard High School in 1931 and Lee's College in 1933. J.B. taught in a one room school in Frozen, KY and then came to Carrollton in 1934 to assist his father with running the family farm. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942. During his time in the military he was injured. Upon his return from the war he worked in the Paris, France Post Office. He served as the State Tobacco Base Arbitrator through 2005, was on the Carroll County Extension Council for decades and the Farm Service agency for many years. He was an active member of the Agriculture Soil Conservation and Stabilization Committee from the early 1950's through the 1980's. In the late 1980's he was appointed to a study group to assess the need for a new justice center in Carroll County from which the William L. Wheeler Hall of Justice was created. During the 1990's he was active in the Eagle Resources Development Council and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. In 2002 he culminated 30 plus years with the Carroll County Conservation District with a shared award created for "service" called the "J.B.'s". He loved to travel and in 1998 he made a return trip to Paris, France. He was an avid reader, enjoying the writings of Appalachian author, Gurney Norman, loved politics and was looking forward to the upcoming election. J.B. enjoyed his friends, family, especially his grandchildren.


He was a member ofthe Carrollton Christian Church for over 50 years, served as a deacon for many years until age 85. Served many terms as a board member as well as a long time Trustee and over saw the maintenance committee, particularly during the removal of the paint from the church building whch was built in the 1800's.


He served in the U.S. Army – WWII (Purple Heart recipient, 2 bronze stars and the distinguished unit award.


J.B. is survived by his daughter-Barbara Oney Garvey (Mike) of Hanover, son-James David Oney (Katrina) of Lawrenceburg, KY, sister-Mary O. Stokes of Louisville, KY, a sister-in-law - Agnes Oney, grandchildren-Cara Michelle Garvey Gray (Joel) of Fishers, IN and Allison Craig Garvey of Hanover.


He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife-Mary Nell Hanlon Oney whom he married on Feb. 1, 1946, 2 brothers-Herbert Oney and Frederick Benton Oney and his brother-in-law - Les Stokes.


Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. by Dr.David Yeager D. Min., Vice President and Dean of Students, Former Chaplin of Hanover College. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 28th from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.


Pallbearers will be: Theoda Franklin, Louis Allen Spencer, Ron Gillespie, Joel Gray,Robert Sarver, Jerry Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers will be: J.B. Bickers, Sam Scott,Charlie Bill Marshall, J.C. Banks, Raymond Hicks, David Rowlett, Jo Shade, Larry Tomlinson, Steve Cooper, Billy Edwards.


In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial Gifts are suggested by the family to go to the King's Daughters' Hospice Unit or the Mary Nell and J.B. Oney Scholarship Fund that is given out each year to a Carroll County High School Graduating Senior. Envelopes will be available at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home or you may mail them to the funeral home at 809 Highland Ave., Carrollton, KY., 41008.
